Laser Therapy Shines Bright at 2011 NAALT Conference

By Jerome True, DC, FIACN

The North American Association for Laser Therapy (NAALT) held its 11th annual conference in Milwaukee, Wisc., Sept. 22-24, 2011. Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, this year's event featured poster presentations by three chiropractic physicians: Dr. Joseph DiDuro from Casa Grande, Ariz.; Dr. Larry Morries from Engelwood, Colo.; and Dr. Alexandra Schnee from Dallas. NAALT is a multidisciplinary organization comprised of researchers, medical doctors, acupuncturists, dentists, chiropractic physicians, physical therapists and veterinarians. Although NAALT primarily represents North American members, the annual convention attracts the top-level researchers in laser therapy from all over the world.

Ron Ignatius Memorial Award

Ronald W. Ignatius
(October 1939 - January 2011)

We sadly mourn the loss of Ron Ignatius who passed away in January 2011. Ron invented the plant growth LED lighting systems for NASA, settting the stage for NASA LEDs in medical applications and earning the prestigious NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame Award in 2000. Mr. Ignatius spent his entire life focused on light. He used over half of all NASA SBIR dollars along with his own personal funds to promote research, having over 18 years devoted to the science of light.

Throughout his life, Ron was very passionate about science and technology. He didn’t just want to know what something was, he needed to know how it worked and how it could be used to better life. It was with this drive that he founded Quantum Devices, Inc. in 1989, where he used his knowledge and dedication towards the principle of “Improving the Quality of Life through the Power in Light.” He was a large man with a large heart and a bigger than life personality, who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his eight grandchildren, and his beloved four legged friend, Cassie.

With a generous donation from WARP PhotoMedicine, NAALT is pleased to have the Ron Ignatius Memorial Award Fund to celebrate research and education in light technology. A Young Investigator (YI) competition is proposed where the highest scoring abstracts submitted to each year's conference will be invited to present their work in a special podium session which will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges for technical and presentation excellence.
