She earned her PhD in Microbiology/Immunology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1997 under the guidance of Dr. Robert Fritz, studying T cell migration into the central nervous system in an animal model of multiple sclerosis. She was a fellow of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society from 1997-2000, studying the role of B cells and antibody in MS pathogenesis under the guidance of Dr. Anne Cross at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. She remained at Washington University until 2003, when she joined the faculty of the Department of Health Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program, at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. She is currently an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director for the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program at UWM. Her current research interests include investigation of near infrared light as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Presentation Title:
The Therapeutic Potential of Near Infrared Light Therapy for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

Presentation Summary:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease characterized by accumulating neurologic deficit. Current therapeutic agents target the inflammatory component but do not prevent the neurodegeneration associated with chronic disease. Near-infrared (NIR) light therapy shows promise in resolution of chronic inflammation and protection from neurodegeneration. The therapeutic potential of NIR light therapy for the treatment of MS was investigated using the Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS. NIR light therapy ameliorated the clinical course of EAE when administered via prevention and treatment protocols. NIR light treatment resulted in up-regulation of anti-inflammatory mediators and down-regulation of proinflammatory mediators in vitro and in vivo. In addition, down-regulation of nitrosative stress and apoptotic death was noted over the course of disease. Ongoing studies investigate neuroprotection by NIR light therapy and the potential of NIR light therapy as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
