North American Association for Laser Therapy - Thanks to all who attended
2007 Conference Summary letter
The North American Association for Laser Therapy hosted its 7th
Annual Scientific Meeting at The Westward Look Resort in Tucson, Arizona
on May 18-20, 2007. Dr. Raymond Lanzafame, NAALT's president, warmly
welcomed everyone with the promise of an exciting weekend. He
emphasized that phototherapy is moving forward through inspiration and
good scientific research, and he stressed that the active participation
of our members and others interested in photomedicine is the key to our
future success.
Steve Liu was this year's conference coordinator and he did an
outstanding job organizing the weekend. The weekend was filled with new
and exciting presentations from world renowned laser researchers and
physicians, including Juanita Anders, Jan Bjordal, Mary Dyson, Levon
Gasparyan, Margaret Naesser, and Anne Penman, to name a few.
Presentations were made by recognized experts in the field and ranged
from basic science to the more "how I do it" approach. Sessions on
practical tips and techniques, cautions and considerations in patient
treatment, regulatory affairs and reimbursement were offered.
The meeting facilities at The Westward Look Resort were a comfortable
natural backdrop for science and discussion nestled in the foothills of
the Sonoran Desert and environs of Tucson. We were treated to a
wonderful reception on Friday evening with incredible views from the
rooftop of the hotel, including guided tours of the night sky with
astronomer docents. The gala dinner on Saturday was filled with good
food, good company and the serenades of a live Mariachi band. The annual
business meeting was held on Saturday. Our By-laws were formally
adopted and standing committees were established to plan the 2008
program, oversee the By-Laws and to consider other activities such as
our website and our educational activities.
Next year's annual meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held in May
- June 2008 depending upon availability. We are currently evaluating
suitable sites in the Eastern United States. Please mark your calendars
now and plan to attend what will undoubtedly be an excellent program.
Ours is a young and growing Society. We have already accomplished
much, but there is more to learn and do. Active participation is the key
ingredient to our future success. Collaboration and dialogue are the
mechanisms by which ideas are exchanged and hypotheses are vetted. In
order to keep the momentum moving forward, it is essential that we
involve as many researchers, physicians, vendors and interested
individuals as members of NAALT. This year's meeting was successful
because it brought together scientists, clinicians from a broad range of
disciplines as well as members of industry to present and discuss a
wide range of topics in the broad field of photomedicine, particularly
in the area of photobiomodulation (biostimulation and bioinhibition).
The meeting built upon out successful meeting in Ft. Lauderdale last
year.
New developments are occurring rapidly, and NAALT is an excellent
resource to keep abreast of the latest developments and thinking. NAALT
is unique relative to the spectrum of professional activities engaged in
by our membership and our multidisciplinary approach. Members of NAALT
also receive Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, the Society's official
Journal as a part of their membership.

Our KEYNOTE SPEAKER was Professor Jan M. Bjordal
Professor Jan M. Bjordal is one of the most prolific and rigorous
researchers in LLLT. He is an authority on the effective dose and
anti-inflammatory effects. He has performed several systematic reviews
on LLLT and NSAID's and analysed the difference. The outcomes are
fascinating.
